Malvasia of Casorzo D.O.C.
Despite its name and its geography, Lower (Basso) Monferrato has slopes exceeding 700 meters in altitude and
is situated to the north of Upper Monferrato.
It is without question the Piedmontese district where winemaking is most extensively practiced.
Malvasia of Casorzo is produced on the hills around Casorzo, and in other six communes: Grazzano Badoglio,
Grana, Vignale Monferrato, Altavilla Monferrato, Ottiglio and Olivola.
Only vineyards with appropriate slopes and exposures and with soils that are primarily made of clay and
calcare are suitable for the production.
Malvasia, which requires no aging, is described as changing from ruby red to cherry pink in color;
sweet, lightly aromatic. Spumante and passito versions are also made. The wines can either be dry or
sweet depending on the amount of fermentation undertaken.
